Festival 2020

We have reluctantly taken the decision to postpone this year's Festival of Arguments. We apologise for the inconvenience and hope you will understand our decision in light of the uncertainty arising from recent global events. We hope to be able to record one or two of the events without an audience, and we will make these available as soon as possible. We also hope to rearrange some of these events in the future, and details will be posted on the website in due course.

Programme of Events
How to get involved

Join the Oxford Uehiro Centre and colleagues from across Oxford in exploring how to think critically about life in this first public festival of practical ethics. The Festival of Arguments is free to take part in, and focusses on exploring today’s most pressing ethical dilemmas. Join us for talks, debates, walks, cafés, book launches, readings and more!

Each evening during the week events are taking place across Oxford that delve deeply into specific issues, as well as taking a step back to explore what practical ethics really is, and how important it is to all of us as we navigate the modern world. We ask how we should respond to conscientious objection in health care, what places drugs have in creating and defining emotions, and why paper straws won’t save the world!

Lunchtime events will also take place during the week at the Weston Library (Broad Street) and the Oxfordshire County Library (Queen Street). Join us on the 23rd, 26th and 27th for the Café of Arguments courtesy of the Bodleian Libraries and Benugo café, for an informal chat with researchers about their work. Anyone who has participated in the Living Library events at the Bodleian in the past is sure to enjoy this opportunity for a longer chat with Oxford’s ethicists.

We wrap us this year’s festival with Story Time at the Oxfordshire County Library. Uehiro Centre colleagues will be providing this week’s story and craft activity, based on a discussion of ethics suitable for children under 10.
