Wellcome Trust New Investigator Award

Dr Tom Douglas (OUC Research Fellow) has been awarded a Wellcome Trust New Investigator Award.

The £450,000 award will enable Dr Douglas to lead a project examining philosophical questions raised by the use of direct brain interventions in criminal justice and crime prevention.

Pharmaceutical and other technological interventions that act directly on the brain are increasingly being used or advocated as criminal remedies or elements in crime prevention programmes. However, despite recent interest in issues at the intersection of philosophy, neuroscience and the criminal law, little philosophical attention has been paid to questions about when, if ever, the state may permissibly offer or impose such interventions. Dr Douglas and three postdoctoral researchers will address these questions, focussing particularly on underlying disputes concerning coercion, manipulation, bodily integrity, complicity and moral liability.
